THE ELVES ARE IN THE WOODS

I’ve heard a tale, the Elves are in the woods today; they’re hunting an apple to share. A single apple. A perfect apple!

They’ll each take a bite – the size of a pomegranate’s aril, and that will be their feast! Then they’ll all return home and bathe in tree oil, and drink more of their sacred green water. When next they feast, a month or so from now, maybe they’ll all share a strawberry!

I’ve heard a tale, the Elves are in the woods today; and they’re hunting an apple to share. ‘Tis said the old woman, Diana is with them!

You know, she was seventy when they took her; or when she ran away with them – the Elves!

‘Tis said, her husband had already died, or she never really had a husband; and when her last cat died, what more reason did she have to stay in the world, anyways?

She had lived a full life, a long life anyways – but seventy – still so young anyways; and besides, some say she was really a hundred and seventy! Before she ran away with them; or the elves took her! Into the woods, the wild, wild woods…

I’ve heard a tale, the Elves are in the woods today; and they’re hunting an apple to share.

‘Tis said, the old woman, Diana is with them! You know, she was seventy when they took her; or when she ran away with them – the Elves!

And no, her cat didn’t die; she took the kitty with her, with them – away into the woods!

And seventy years or more she’s been living all this time with them – the Elves, in the wild, wild woods – her and her kitty.

And today, today I’ve heard a tale, the Elves are in the woods; and they’re hunting a perfect apple to share!

‘Tis said, the old woman, Diana is with them! And she eats just like them; she’ll savor a bite of the apple, a single bite no bigger than a pomegranate’s aril! And that will be her feast along with the Elves.

But I wonder does the kitty eat the apple as well? Maybe!

For they don’t eat food like we do, them Elves – and them touched by the Elves; oh no, they just drink their holy green water for a month and then they’ll all go on a great hunt to find a single fruit, or maybe vegetable or root, for all of them to share. And one and all they’ll take a bite, no bigger than a pomegranate’s aril!

Or sometimes, sometimes, even a bite as small as the seed of a strawberry! And that will be their feast; then, they’ll all return home and bathe in tree oil, yes, tree oil – because they don’t bathe like we do in water – oh no, never in water! They charm the trees for oil and use the tree oil to bathe.

And then the only water they will drink, will be more of their sacred green elve’y water. More algae then water! And when next they feast, a month or so from now – the moon will have rolled in full and fully waned. Then, in the new light of a new day, just as now, this very day, today – they’ll all unweave the forest from being closed around them, and all together they’ll all go on a great hunt!

Maybe this time – they’ll all share a strawberry! But not before picking every one of its’ prized seeds off, and then one and all, they’ll carve every one of the strawberry seeds with strange elve’y images and spread the pictures far and wide upon the wind; before finishing their tiny bite of the feast and altogether returning home to the wild, wild woods…

But, an apple, oh, a sweet apple! Might truly please them more than a strawberry, today!

But, oh, I would like very much to find such a seed – as carved by the Elves!

But, today, today, I’ve heard a tale, the Elves are in the woods today; and they’re hunting not for strawberry – but for an apple to share. A single apple. A perfect apple!

And they say, the old woman, Diana is with them, her and her kitty! I would also like to see her and her pretty kitty!

But alas, I’ve only heard a tale, the Elves are in the woods today; and it all sounds like a fairytale to me…

But, still I’ll stay home and bake pie; and wonder, if the Elves will come instead for me – like they did for Diana and her kitty – for today, I’m near seventy –

And the only apples left –

are in my perfect, apple pie!
