Ban Bullhooks in California

Elephants forced to perform in circuses endure years of harsh conditions and are subjected to physical abuse with sharp bullhooks — metal tools that resemble a fireplace poker — all to perform confusing and difficult tricks. Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) are spearheading legislation to prevent this cruel and inhumane practice in California.

The bill has passed the senate and could be voted on by the full assembly as early as Monday. Even if you’ve already called, please call Asmblymbr. Tony Thurmond at (916) 319-2015 again and urge support for SB 716. You can say, “I am a constituent, and I am calling to ask you to please support SB 716 to prohibit the use of bullhooks on elephants.”
